CPAP

A CPAP is medical equipment designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP machines deliver a stream of filtered and pressurized air into a patient’s airway, holding the airway open and preventing it from collapsing while asleep.

Similar machines called Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure machines (or BiPAP machines) use two pressures to hold the airway open instead of one.

CPAP machines made by manufacturer Philips are the subject of a recall and several lawsuits by individuals who were harmed by them.

Philips announced in June 2021 that it was recalling some BiPAP and CPAP machines as well as other ventilators because of health risks associated with polyester-based polyurethane foam that was used in the devices. The foam can reportedly break and enter the device’s air pathway, resulting in a risk of inhalation by patients.

Philips’ recall notice details that exposure to the foam may result in headache, irritation, inflammation, respiratory issues, and cancer.

Individuals who suffered from these issues after using a recalled Philips CPAP machine may be entitled to compensation.
