Hair Relaxer Lawsuits
An October 2022 study demonstrates a link between hair relaxers/chemical straighteners with certain female reproductive health conditions.
Hair relaxers contain chemicals that temporarily straighten curly hair by breaking down protein bonds. Some of these chemicals may be endocrine disruptors.
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (“EDCs”) negatively impact the endocrine system.
Exposure to these chemicals may result in serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, including:
- Various types of cancer
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
Black women are disproportionately at risk of illnesses caused by hair relaxers and endocrine-disrupting chemicals: a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (“NIH”) found that approximately 60% of the participants who used hair relaxers the previous year identified as Black women.
